I am a native Iowan, born and raised in Cherokee. As a young man, I attended Iowa State University and earned a Business Administration Degree. While working full time at the Des Moines Younkers store, I attended night school at Drake University to earn a Masters Degree in Business Administration. My wife Julie and I met while working together at Younkers, we later married, and have three grown daughters. When my family was young, we decided we wanted them to grow up in Pella and attend one of the excellent schools there. We felt it was important for them to be raised in a small town and be closer to our extended family. We have lived here since 1996. My career includes 12 years at Younkers and 30 years at Storey Kenworthy where I am currently working as the Chief Operating Officer. I also served the community of Pella for 8 years on City Council and 8 years as the Mayor.
I have always been politically active. If I see something I think I can improve, I see it as my duty to get involved. I feel I have been blessed with many gifts, and I believe God calls us to share these gifts with others. I have adopted Mark 10:45 as my guiding Bible verse: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” To me, this is a biblical call to serve our community.
Having spent 40+ years in business and 16 years in local politics first as a Councilman and then as Mayor, I am a proven leader who can manage many difficult tasks with an open mind and kind heart.
